Investor from the Middle East would invest in 10,000 hectares of land, but would also agree to half that amount

Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković stated that an investor from the Middle East is seeking 10,000 hectares of land in Slavonia and that it needs to be determined whether at least 5,000 hectares of agricultural land in Vukovar-Srijem County can be secured for this investor’s needs.

– This is an investor from the Middle East. Today I took the opportunity to put this proposal on the table and see if we can arrange a model that would allow us to unify agricultural land. It could be 5,000, not 10,000 hectares. Perhaps the EU could help us through clusters, and the Government with subsidies so that when the investor arrives, we can say – here we are ready, said Orešković after a meeting with entrepreneurs and representatives of local self-government and administration from Vukovar-Srijem County.

The Prime Minister noted that there are 800,000 hectares of agricultural land in Croatia that are not being used at all and that models need to be found to put this land into use.

– We also discussed assistance to the economy. We mentioned a fund of 500 million euros, which would help investors access credit funds and initial capital, said Orešković.

The Prime Minister also mentioned public procurement as one of the topics of discussion.

– They told me that it is a disaster here. I think it is overly complicated and we are now working on a law to simplify public procurement, he said.

The head of agriculture in Vukovar-Srijem County, Andrija Matić, told reporters that there are no available 10,000 hectares of agricultural land in Vukovar-Srijem County. According to him, there are 149,000 hectares of agricultural land in that county, and all of it is being cultivated, so there are no free hectares for sale.

The meeting of Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković with entrepreneurs and representatives of county and local authorities is the central event of the Prime Minister’s two-day stay in Vukovar-Srijem County, during which he will also visit several family farms to directly familiarize himself with the problems faced by farmers.
