Relentless HRT: Will students also pay the RTV subscription?

The Regional Consumer Protection Organization warns that the HRT fee is not a subscription for a television or radio, but a state tax for the use of radio and/or television signals.

Among Zagreb students, information has recently circulated on social media that some of their fellow student tenants have faced demands from HRT to pay the RTV fee even though they do not have a television receiver, but rather laptops.

– There is a fear that they will now start targeting student dormitories – students are concerned, reports Slobodna Dalmacija.

However, this is not the first such case from student life in Croatia. Some student tenants in Osijek also faced HRT bills for paying the RTV fee for laptops this winter, on which occasion HRT referred to Article 34 of the RTV fee law, according to which anyone who has a radio and/or television receiver, or another device for receiving radio or audiovisual programs is liable for the subscription. Among the mentioned other devices are laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other communication “wonders of technology.”

– As soon as a consumer owns an apartment, business space, or has a car, it is assumed that they have some device capable of receiving radio or TV signals. In practice today, even with an average mobile phone, one can receive radio and even TV signals, and the owner of such a device must pay the HRT fee – they note in ROZP.
