Apples for Sniffing

The stickers on every apple, pear, plum, peach… is a notorious absurdity that we have uncritically adopted from the over-regulated European Union.

My grandmother used to tell me that an apple should be eaten unpeeled, as the skin is the healthiest part. Recent studies confirm this. However, more and more people today peel the skin off apples, fearing pesticides and who knows what else. The latest reason for peeling is – the stickers.

I just don’t know who thought it was a good idea to stick some kind of label on every apple or pear. I can still understand such advertising on oranges or lemons, which we eat without the skin. But the stickers on every apple, pear, plum, peach… is a notorious absurdity that we have, it seems to me, uncritically adopted from the over-regulated European Union. Thus, with European habits, European retail chains imported European stickers on every apple. And they are quite well stuck, so they can only be removed by vigorous rubbing under water. And then I realized – this is a discreet message from the EU that we should thoroughly wash apples. Due to pesticides, but also the glue, so that we do not – sniff apples.
