Does Croatia Need Military Service?

The opening of the topic regarding the reintroduction of military service seems to have opened another Pandora’s box in the media space. Of course, a barrage of comments has begun, some positive, some absolutely negative. The media mocks some political statements, and rightly so. How else to comment on statements like “all young men from across Croatia get to know and recognize each other in one training, that there are no antagonisms between the North and the South, that one from Istria knows he has a brother in Slavonia” or statements like we will “get strong, stable men”. The military is a serious “matter” and should be treated as such.

At the time of the abolition of military service, out of 25,000 calls for service, barely 2,500 recruits responded, which was clear evidence of interest. The crisis and high unemployment, however, sparked greater interest in entering the military system. But in all this, regardless of their own arguments, no one conducted an analysis of the system nor made any projections for the future. The fact is that the world, especially this region, is becoming an increasingly insecure place, and the refugee crisis has only caused new discomfort. Although the refugee crisis is not a military issue.

– We have no choice, we must have an army. The introduction of military service is part of structuring Croatia as a state, and without it, we are doomed to disappear even faster – says Pavle Kalinić, head of the Office for Emergency Management of the City of Zagreb.

On the other hand, Željka Antunović, former Minister of Defense, claims:

– This initiative is legitimate, but it is not realistic. Over the past 10 years, regarding military issues, politics has achieved some sort of consensus. The question of introducing military service is not an emotional issue, but a defense issue.
