German-Croatian task force agrees to invest in the Croatian economy

Croatia and Germany want to intensify their relations, especially in the economic sphere, and also align their positions regarding the resolution of the refugee crisis, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Croatian Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković on Tuesday after their meeting in Berlin.

– I discussed the plans of the new Croatian government with great interest today with the Croatian Prime Minister, and I believe that, especially regarding the economy, there is a possibility of intensifying cooperation, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressing reporters at a joint press conference after a working lunch with Croatian Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković, who is on his first visit to Germany since taking office.

According to media reports, she announced the establishment of a special German-Croatian team, the so-called “task force,” which is expected to discuss investment opportunities in the Croatian economy at a meeting on March 15, and she also reminded that a few weeks ago, Foreign Ministers Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Miro Kovač agreed to revive the German-Croatian Forum, which would also aim to deepen economic relations.

– I support the reform measures of the new Croatian government that should contribute to strengthening the Croatian economy. The more transparent the political and economic conditions are, the greater the chances for investments, and that was one of the most important moments of our discussion today, emphasized Merkel.

– The main goal of the Croatian government, which is reform-oriented, is to strengthen the economy, create a favorable investment climate, and improve the standard of living for all citizens of Croatia, said Croatian Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković, announcing a reduction in Croatian debt and adherence to a deficit limit of 3 percent, as stipulated by the Maastricht criteria.

– We particularly want to increase investments in infrastructure, energy, tourism, manufacturing, and other segments, which will not only be good for Croatia but also for all of Europe, said Orešković, expressing a desire for an upcoming meeting with Chancellor Merkel in Zagreb.
