Lego Introduces First Figure in Wheelchair

As part of the “Fun in the Park” set, which will hit the market in June, Lego has launched a figure of a smiling person in a wheelchair accompanied by a guide dog for the disabled, along with several new figures – an ice cream vendor, a cyclist, and a man pushing a stroller with a baby.

Lego recently unveiled the first figure in a wheelchair at toy fairs in Nuremberg and London, following last year’s Toy Like Me campaign, where activists petitioned the Danish company to portray disability in a positive and more realistic way through popular toys. As part of the “Fun in the Park” set, which will be available in June, Lego has launched a figure of a smiling person in a wheelchair accompanied by a guide dog for the disabled, along with several new figures – an ice cream vendor, a cyclist, and a man pushing a stroller with a baby.

The toy emerged after criticism directed at Lego for the absence of diverse figures with disabilities in their sets, media reports say.

During last year’s campaign launched under the name Toy Like Me, more than 20,000 signatures were collected from users requesting that the Danish manufacturer offer various figures with disabilities.

– The company continues to ignore the existence of 150 million disabled children in the world as it does not offer a single figure representing them. In this way, the toy industry, aimed precisely at them, excludes them or represents disability in an exclusive manner, wrote the petition initiators last year on the Change.org website.

The company announced that interest in the new Lego set is so high that there are already pre-orders for its purchase.
