The new President of the Croatian Parliament, academic Željko Reiner, was born in Zagreb in 1953, where he completed primary school and the Classical Gymnasium, and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in 1976.
He obtained his doctorate at the University of Zagreb in 1982, after which he specialized in internal medicine in Zagreb and Hamburg. He was in postdoctoral training in Oklahoma City. He was elected as an assistant professor in 1986, and two years later he was first elected as a full professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb.
Željko Reiner was the head of the Clinical Department of the Clinic for Pathophysiology at KBC Zagreb for nine years, after which he was elected as the head of the Clinic for Internal Diseases. Since 2003, he has been the head of the Institute for Metabolic Diseases, and then the head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb. Since 2010, he has been a member of the Council of the University of Zagreb. From 2004 to 2012, Reiner was the director of KBC Zagreb. He has been a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Croatia since 1990, and he was its president for eight years. He was a collaborating member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU), and since 2006 he has been their regular member – academician.
