Croatian citizens spent 10 billion kuna on multi-day trips last year

Last year, 49 percent of Croatian citizens aged 15 and over, or 1.8 million, went on at least one private multi-day trip, and they spent nearly 10 billion kuna on these trips.

These are the data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics from the research “Tourist Activity of the Population of the Republic of Croatia in 2014.” Croatian citizens made a total of 6.6 million private trips last year, of which 4.6 million or nearly 70 percent were in Croatia, and the remaining 2 million abroad, primarily to Bosnia and Herzegovina, 23.2 percent. Austria follows with a share of 12.6 percent of total trips abroad, Slovenia has a similar share of 12.5 percent, while Italy ranks fourth with 9 percent, and Germany fifth with a share of 7.7 percent.

The most common motivation for going on a private multi-day trip was visiting relatives and friends, accounting for 39.2 percent of trips or 2.6 million. A seaside vacation ranked second with 1.3 million trips or a share of 19 percent, and third was a city vacation with 676 thousand trips or 10.2 percent share.
 On private multi-day trips, residents of Croatia recorded a total of 37.4 million overnight stays last year, of which 24.6 million or 65.6 percent were in Croatia, and nearly 13 million or 34.4 percent on trips abroad. The average number of overnight stays on one trip abroad was 6.3, while in Croatia it was 5.3.

According to the type of accommodation, Croatian citizens last year recorded the most overnight stays, 15.8 million or 42.1 percent, in unpaid accommodation with relatives and friends. In total, Croatian citizens spent 9.9 billion kuna on private multi-day trips, of which 4.2 billion kuna or 43 percent in Croatia, and slightly more, 57 percent or 5.6 billion kuna on trips abroad.

Considering the length of trips, about a third or 3.3 billion kuna was spent on shorter trips (one to three overnight stays), while 6.6 billion kuna or 66.8 percent was spent on longer trips (four or more overnight stays). The average cost per trip was 1,482 kuna, with Croatian citizens spending an average of 842 kuna on shorter trips and 2,386 kuna on longer ones. Regarding the length of trips, nearly 4 million or 58.5 percent were shorter, while about 2.7 million or 41.5 percent were longer.  

In 2014, 1.9 million or 51 percent of the population of Croatia aged 15 and over did not travel on private multi-day trips. The most common reasons for not traveling were lack of financial resources (67.2 percent), health reasons (16.9 percent), dislike of traveling, and lack of free time due to family obligations (12.9 percent), etc.

At least one business multi-day trip was taken by 371 thousand or 10.2 percent of Croatian citizens aged 15 and over last year. A total of 1.5 million business trips were made last year, of which 787 thousand trips or 51.6 percent were in Croatia, and 737 thousand or 48.4 percent abroad. The most traveled business destinations abroad were Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Austria. Total expenditures for business trips last year amounted to 4.6 billion kuna, of which 1.1 billion kuna was for business trips in Croatia, and 3.5 billion kuna for those abroad. 

According to DZS data, in 2014, citizens aged 15 and over made 13 million one-day trips, of which 11.3 million (87.2 percent) were private, and 1.7 million (12.8 percent) were business.
