Šundov: Directors, Adapt to Changes or You Will Disappear

How many of you here consider yourselves leaders? – asked Željko Šundov from Amrop, towards the end of the procurement conference, to the still numerous audience in the Zagreb Forum hall.

– Being a leader means knowing how to motivate people to work, just as it means knowing how to help them achieve the best possible results – stated Šundov during his presentation titled “Challenges of Leadership in Procurement”.

– In the last ten years, many things around us have changed. Too much for us to remain the same as before. Just four years ago, I could handle all the challenges that arose, while today that is no longer the case. People over fifty years old are no longer desirable in the position of executive directors. Not because they do not know their job, but because the needs are different – warns Šundov, adding that the perception of an executive director as a rock star is over.

To adapt to new times, leaders of the new era should know themselves, build trust within the team, tell compelling stories, inspire innovation and creativity, and they need to be able to admit when they are wrong, claims Šundov.

– If you are a leader, be cautious; what brought you to this position will not keep you there – concludes Šundov.

Business coach Davor Bilman spoke about negotiating in procurement as an art.

– Never go into negotiations from which you cannot leave at any moment. Consider this the most important rule of negotiation. Also, never use intervals, use the phrase “around”, and do not rely on improvisation, but prepare well – advises the business coach.

So what should a good negotiator know? The introduction to the conversation should be in the spirit of collaboration, and then it should be determined where the person being negotiated with stands on the hierarchical power ladder, says Bilman.

– It is extremely important to know which negotiation technique to use. Different personality types require different negotiation techniques, and a successful negotiator recognizes when it is time to conclude the discussion. If an agreement has not been reached, leave the door open – advises Bilman.
