Member of the European Parliament Tonino Picula raised a question to the European Commission in mid-September regarding the status of protection for Dalmatian prosciutto under the geographical indication, and he has now received a response from the EC.
– Dalmatian prosciutto is produced throughout the geographical area of Dalmatia, which encompasses the longest and largest part of the Croatian coastline along the Adriatic Sea. It consists of the island and coastal part as well as the sub-Mediterranean interior. The connection of Dalmatian prosciutto to the geographical area in which it is produced is based on its properties that arise from traditional production methods, as well as on the reputation that this regional product has – emphasized Picula in his inquiry.
Phil Hogan, the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, responded that ‘after the latest documentation received by the Commission, Dalmatian prosciutto was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on October 1, 2015.’
This means that it will soon be registered and protected on the common EU market, alongside Krk prosciutto, Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Cres, Neretva mandarins, Ogulin sour cabbage, Baranja kulen, and Lika potatoes.
Picula stated that he is satisfied with the quick response from the Commission, especially since ‘Dalmatian prosciutto’ already holds numerous awards and recognitions at both national and international levels, and is recognized beyond the borders of its production.
