The American space agency NASA announced a sensational discovery related to the planet Mars at a press conference. The media was presented with evidence of the existence of liquid water on the ‘red planet’.
Although there were speculations before the conference that evidence of traces of life on Mars would be announced, today’s discovery can be called a milestone in the exploration of the secrets this planet holds.
‘Liquid water exists on the surface of Mars,’ said Michael Meyer, head of NASA’s research program scientific team. It was stated at the conference that ‘this is not about rivers and oceans,’ but that ‘during the summer months, liquid water flows through canyons and craters.’
Scientists are unsure where the water comes from or how much there is, but they believe that its source may be ice located beneath the surface or that it comes from the atmosphere. However, this discovery greatly increases the chances that some forms of life exist on Mars.
‘Based on this, we believe that it is at least possible to create an environment in which life on Mars is possible,’ added Michael Meyer. ‘In any case, this is strong evidence that there is potential for sustaining life on Mars, including human life, should the possibility arise for the human species to colonize the planet,’ said scientist Lujendra Ojha.
