The registered unemployment rate in Croatia was 15.9 percent in August, the same as in July, marking its lowest level in nearly six years, according to data released on Wednesday by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS).
After five months of continuous decline, the unemployment rate remained unchanged on a monthly basis in August at its lowest level since October 2009, when it was 15.6 percent. However, compared to August of last year, when it was 17.4 percent, the unemployment rate was 1.5 percentage points lower last month.
While the unemployment rate has been declining in recent months on a monthly basis due to hiring during the tourist season, this seasonal effect will weaken in the coming months. For example, data from the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ) shows that there are currently 256,253 unemployed persons, which is about 500 fewer than at the end of August.
According to previously published data from HZZ, at the end of August, there were 256,748 registered unemployed persons, which is a decrease of 0.5 percent or 1,246 persons compared to July, while on an annual basis, the number of unemployed is down by 11.4 percent or 33,141 persons.
