Considering that so far only Latvia and Greece have exercised their right to exemption from Monsanto’s request for the cultivation of GMOs throughout the Union, we asked the Ministry of Agriculture about Croatia’s intentions.
The Ministry, headed by Tihomir Jakovina, reminds us of Croatia’s negative stance towards GMO cultivation and explains that they are currently working on a request ‘to the European Commission based on the provisions of Directive 2001/18/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of March 12, 2001, on the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms and repealing Council Directive 90/220/EEC, which allows for the geographical exemption of a member state from the authorization for the marketing of GMOs for cultivation purposes.’
From the response, it can be inferred that Croatia will seek an exemption from the request for GMO cultivation in the EU in the future.
