Croatian President Ivo Josipović today, as every Saturday, held his traditional coffee with citizens at the President’s Office in Pantovčak, where he commented on recent events related to the destruction and theft of Cyrillic plaques.
‘It is simply hard to accept after we have bloodily gained our independence, after we have shown Croatia as a European country with great effort, to watch what is happening today. Today Vukovar, yesterday Udbina, tomorrow something else. Plaques, signs, monuments… What is next? Will someone’s head be broken tomorrow? This is a moment when we really all need to understand that we are fighting for a European Croatia where quality and good living is possible and that we respect each other. What is happening is a shame for all of us. I call first and foremost on the Government, I call on the opposition, I call on the defenders who have defended Croatia with such zeal to also defend its dignity and to defend it as an EU country. We all bear responsibility and we must not allow the story about Cyrillic to turn into a story of the failure of the Republic of Croatia,’ said President Ivo Josipović.
