Apple announced today that it sold as many as 9 million new iPhone 5S and 5C units during the first weekend after their launch. This significantly surpassed the previous record set by the iPhone 5 last year, which sold ‘only’ 5 million units in its first weekend.
Of course, this time there are two models compared to one, and Apple does not specify their ratio in the reported result. However, reports from other sources indicate that the stronger model, the iPhone 5S, is selling significantly better, nearly three times more than the cheaper iPhone 5C.
Additionally, independent data already indicates that these two models account for 1.5 percent of the total iPhone base in the U.S.
Apple also announced that its new mobile operating system, iOS 7, which was officially released last week, is already installed on over 200 million devices.
The good results were certainly aided by the fact that among the 11 markets where the sale of new iPhones began, there is also China, where demand is exceptionally high.
It is expected that these excellent results will also reflect in an increase in Apple’s stock price, which fell after the recent official presentation of the new iPhones. At that time, analysts criticized the insufficient amount of innovation, but for consumers, this was evidently not a decisive factor in their decision to purchase new phones.
