Given that the European Commission clearly stated a few days ago that it expects a swift and unconditional change to ‘Lex Perković’, it could be assumed that new pressures on Croatia would follow.
It seems that European Commissioner for Justice Viviane Reding no longer intends to correspond with Zagreb. HTV has learned that instead of writing letters, she has already prepared a list of possible penalties for Croatia. If Prime Minister Zoran Milanović ignores the last warning and does not urgently repeal the so-called Lex Perković, Reding will present a proposal for sanctions against Croatia to the Commission in a few weeks. The next step would be consultations with all member states regarding Croatia’s violation of Union rules.
Possible sanctions would only relate to the areas of justice and internal affairs. Thus, not to a reduction of funds from structural funds, but, as HTV announced a few weeks ago, very likely to a slowdown in Croatia’s entry into Schengen.
And as it now seems, the Government is not in a hurry to change the so-called Lex Perković. Speaker of the Parliament Josip Leko stated that a week before the start of the autumn session, the change of the disputed law is not currently on the agenda. He is passing the ball to the Government because, he says, the change of the law is within its jurisdiction.
