Minister of Justice Orsat Miljenić commented in the HRT News on the letter he sent in response to the letter from Commissioner Viviane Reding regarding the so-called Lex Perković.
Miljenić emphasized that recent events have highlighted two issues that we, as a society, must resolve.
– One issue is the attitude towards the past and the final removal of the statute of limitations that protects perpetrators of the worst, most heinous crimes, allowing them to practically laugh at us while we can do nothing because they are protected by the statute of limitations. This is absurd, and therefore we must change the Constitution because there is no other way. The second issue, which is also broader socially, is that we must understand that Croatia, since July 1, 2013, is not what it was before July 1. We are a full-fledged country, and as such, we must act. Therefore, our only duty from the Croatian Government is to protect Croatian interests. There is no liking or disliking in this. Now someone tells me that someone will mind this or not. I don’t care if someone will mind – said Miljenić.
The Minister of Justice also stated that Croatia has its position that needs to be defended in every possible way.
– It is true, we could have resolved this, it didn’t work out, but we will fight for Croatian citizens to be in the same position as any citizens. This means our initiative, which has already gone to the commission, is to generally regulate this issue – concluded Minister Miljenić.
