Today marks the deadline set by the European Commission for Croatia to respond regarding when it will repeal the law enacted just one day before joining the European Union, referred to locally as ‘lex Perković’.
What and when Croatia will respond to the ultimatum from European Commissioner for Justice Viviane Reding is still uncertain.
If we are to judge by the statements of Foreign and European Affairs Minister Vesna Pusić, Croatia will concede to the demands and ‘change the limitation on the application of European arrest warrants prior to 2002’. There is no formal decision at this moment, but a solution will be found, and Croatia will certainly operate within the framework of its obligations and the application of the European arrest warrant, Pusić said. When asked if this means that the law will change in the coming weeks, Pusić replied: I expect so!
Regarding the changes to the law that he authored, the relevant minister apparently knows nothing yet. The Prime Minister was clear enough three days ago, and there are no changes in that regard, said Orsat Miljenić.
