In Egypt, Stock Exchange and Banks Closed Due to Bloody Unrest

The Egyptian stock exchange and banks will not operate today following yesterday’s bloody unrest in the country, as decided by the President of the Egyptian Stock Exchange, Mohammed Omran, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, Hisham Ramiz.

According to Al Arabiya, banks did not operate yesterday either. This marks a true halt in monetary trading since the revolution in January 2011, when former President Hosni Mubarak was ousted. At that time, trading on the stock exchange was suspended for as long as two months.

According to Bloomberg, this break is expected to be shorter this time, with trading on the stock exchange anticipated to resume on Sunday.

These measures were taken as a result of bloody protests on Wednesday, in which it is estimated that at least 278 people were killed. The Egyptian stock exchange closed trading on Wednesday with a loss of 1.7 points.
