The State Bureau of Statistics presented the results of the 2011 census of population, households, and apartments at a press conference. It was determined that the number of illiterate individuals is decreasing, while the number of highly educated and computer literate individuals is increasing. Among the highly educated, there are more women.
The most common male name in Croatia is Ivan (followed by Josip, Marko, Stjepan, and Tomislav), and the most common female name is Marija (Ana and Ivana), while the most common surnames are Horvat, Kovačević, and Babić, stated Marko Krištof, the director of the State Bureau of Statistics, at the press conference.
The percentage of illiterate individuals over the age of 10 is 0.8% (1.3% women and 0.4% men). The highest number of illiterate individuals is in Šibenik-Knin County, followed by Vukovar-Srijem and Požega-Slavonia Counties. The lowest number of illiterate individuals is in Istria County, the city of Zagreb, and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
In the population over the age of 15, 30.8% have completed at least primary school, 52.6% have completed secondary school, and 16.4% are highly educated in Croatia. Among those aged 25 to 29, 26.6% are highly educated, while only 8.6% of individuals over 70 years old have higher education. The highest percentage of highly educated individuals is in Zagreb (29%), Primorje-Gorski Kotar, and Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The lowest percentage is in Virovitica-Podravina County.
About 57.4% of citizens use the internet. Interestingly, 1.7% of individuals over 75 years old use email. The most educated countries in Europe are Ireland, the UK, and Finland. The good news is that Croatia is more educated than Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Italy.
The State Bureau of Statistics also presented a search engine on its website where the frequency of names and surnames in Croatia can be checked.
