The unique spirit of the city, which Shanghai owes to all these different influences throughout history, can be felt at every step, as journalist Matilda Bačelić checked for our summer double issue of Lider trend. As she says, unlike most Chinese cities, Shanghai is walkable, allowing one to experience the life of the city firsthand. For example, encountering a group of people practicing tai chi in a park or on the street.
Although one would expect a city of such size to be somewhat dirty and chaotic, Shanghai is the exact opposite. It is extremely clean, and traffic (although it is unrealistic to expect any speed) functions quite well. There are many parks and tree-lined streets, especially in the French Quarter. The problems of Shanghai include overcrowding, noise, air and river pollution, and in the 1990s it was declared one of the most environmentally endangered cities in the world.
Nevertheless, there are countless more reasons why Shanghai should be visited. Although it is called the Paris of the East, today it is said: Paris is the past, New York is the present, and Shanghai is the future.
