Myanmar’s President Thein Sein has promised to release all political prisoners from jail by the end of the year and stated that he believes a ceasefire could occur across the country for the first time in sixty years within the next few weeks.
Sein emphasized during a conversation in London with British Prime Minister David Cameron that a special commission is carefully reviewing all cases of political prisoners and that the government intends to sign a peace agreement soon aimed at ending ethnic conflicts.
He stated that Myanmar does not want to become dependent on international aid, but that the country ‘needs assistance until it passes the transitional period and stands on its own feet.’
