Ranko Ostojić will be the first member of the Government to receive the confidence of the Parliament according to the rules of the new parliamentary procedure, which emphasizes committees rather than the plenary session for subsequent appointments of government members, reports HRT.
The proposal to express confidence in the current Minister of the Interior for the position of Vice President of the Government will be presented to the Committee on the Constitution, Rules of Procedure, and Political System. Ostojić is expected to replace Neven Mimica, the European Commissioner for Consumer Protection, in the Banski Dvori.
The new rules stipulate that, for subsequent appointments of government members, the candidate is discussed in the relevant parliamentary committee, and they may be asked questions to which they must respond. After the relevant committee hears the candidate, in this case Ostojić, the proposal for expressing confidence goes to the plenary session where only the vote of confidence is held, without discussion.
It is expected that the Parliament will vote on Ostojić’s confidence on Friday.
In cases where two or more parliamentary committees are responsible for a government member, the rules stipulate that the candidate is heard at a joint meeting of those committees. Exceptionally, if the jurisdiction of a specific parliamentary committee cannot be determined, the candidate is heard in the Committee on the Constitution and Rules of Procedure.
