Certain brands of cigarettes will have higher prices starting today, according to data from the Customs Administration, which has received reports of new retail prices from retailers.
Thus, some brands of TDR and Philip Morris will increase by one kuna.
The Ministry of Finance recently announced that cigarettes can be sold at higher retail prices than those indicated on the tobacco stamp, but not higher than the last reported retail price.
The State Inspectorate announced that all retailers who have or will put cigarettes marked with lower price stamps on sale must inform consumers about the higher price in an appropriate and accessible manner.
The more expensive cigarettes are a result of the introduction of new excise duties, which will gradually increase in three phases until the end of 2017, ultimately leading to a significant increase in cigarette prices.
With the Excise Duty Act, which came into force on July 1, the excise duty system in Croatia will be fully aligned with that of the EU.
How much cigarette prices will rise as a result depends on how much manufacturers want to lower their margins, said Finance Minister Slavko Linić in January when the government submitted the proposal for this law to parliamentary procedure.
