In light of the published information regarding the absence of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the HDZ requested in the Parliament that the Prime Minister come and explain what is happening, reports Večernji list.
Gordan Jandroković, on behalf of the HDZ, called on Zoran Milanović to withdraw the proposal for amendments to the Law on Cooperation with EU Member States in Criminal Matters, colloquially known as Lex Perković. This, according to HDZ’s Gordan Jandroković, would at least somewhat save Croatia’s face.
– You played with fire and now you are burned. But you are not the only ones who are burned; the Republic of Croatia is now embarrassed as it enters the European Union – said Jandroković. He stated that the SDP protects those who carried out liquidations and that with the information about Merkel’s absence from Zagreb, the Croatian Government received a clear message.
– Instead of celebrating, we must be ashamed because the Government wants to protect those who committed crimes – said Jandroković. He added that Croatia knew how to condemn the NDH, that it had the strength to confront the crimes from the Homeland War, but that it is incomprehensible that some cannot confront the crimes from communism.
The president of the Labour Party, Dragutin Lesar, believes that Croatia has a significant problem with credibility.
– I am only interested in one thing, has the Government decided to withdraw this law – said Lesar. HDSSB’s Josip Salapić also believes that Croatia’s credibility is questionable.
Independent MP Jadranka Kosor emphasized that she feels great discomfort and shame and reiterated that the law currently being amended was adopted in 2010 based on amendments to the Constitution from that year, in which both the then opposition and the current government participated. She stated that the law should not be withdrawn but that the amendment to remove the restrictions on extradition should be accepted. She also finds it particularly uncomfortable that Germany ratified the accession treaty on June 6, while the Government sent amendments to the law on June 13.
– After this, we know what is happening, and the question is whether anyone else will cancel their arrival in Zagreb for the ceremony marking entry into the EU – said Kosor.
