After several failed attempts, Ivica Todorić has finally succeeded. By purchasing the ‘best neighbor’ Mercator, he has become the absolute ruler of regional shelves, which means that all those engaged in retail in the region will have to redefine and reposition their strategies.
Each supplier will have to do their own calculations – whether the larger volume and market share that the united trader can offer is profitable after accounting for the reduction of their own margin. Those who are not willing to make concessions will disappear from the shelves and be replaced by more efficient European competition.
