On Tuesday, the new book by journalist and publicist Višnja Starešina was presented at the Croatian Journalists’ House.
The book ‘EU in 100 Steps’, published by Naklada Ljevak, represents a selection of the author’s columns published in the business weekly Lider from 2005 to 2013. As a long-time correspondent for Večernji list at the UN in Geneva and The Hague, her areas of interest included international political relations, Croatia’s position in the international environment, and the process of Croatia’s accession to the EU.
Miodrag Šajatović, the editor-in-chief of Lider, Nadan Vidošević, as the author of the book’s preface, and EU representative Davor Stier spoke about the book and the author’s work. Among the numerous audience were journalists Danko Družijanić and Mirjana Rakić, as well as Ljubo Jurčić and Andrija Hebrang. As Stier emphasized, the book is a source of the author’s reflections and conclusions regarding Croatia’s accession negotiations, which were often more far-sighted than the statements and actions of Croatian politicians, even though they had far more information at their disposal.
She warned of the lack of awareness in the Croatian public about everything that happened during the accession negotiations and the inability to learn from past mistakes.
She also expressed hope that a new era lies ahead of us that will open us up as a society and teach us to fight for our own interests.
