Marijan Đurek, the former mayor of Zlatar, is the first mayor in Croatia to be convicted for leading the city to bankruptcy.
The verdict, delivered yesterday by the Council of the Zagreb County Court, presided over by Judge Tanja Pavelin Borzić, is not yet final, reports Večernji list.
Đurek, who did not appear at the announcement of the verdict, has been provisionally sentenced to a unique penalty of three years in prison for abuse of position and authority, forgery of documents, and negligent management of business records.
