On Croatian Highways More Vehicles and Higher Toll Revenue

The number of vehicles on highways in Croatia in the first quarter of this year increased by 1.2 percent compared to the same period last year, while toll revenue rose by 8 percent, according to data from the Croatian Association of Concessionaires for Toll Highways (HUKA).

Four highway concessionaires recorded a total of 10.9 million vehicles in the first three months, and the total toll revenue amounted to 346 million kuna (excluding VAT).

While the total number of vehicles on highways increased by 1.2 percent compared to the first quarter of last year, toll revenue grew by 8 percent, influenced by the toll increase in the middle of last year. Specifically, in early June last year, Hrvatske autoceste (HAC) and Autocesta Rijeka-Zagreb raised tolls for cash or card payments by 15 percent, and in early August, Autocesta Zagreb-Macelj (AZM) also increased the toll from Zaprešić to Trakošćan by 15 percent.

According to HUKA data, HAC and ARZ recorded fewer vehicles in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, but higher toll revenue, while the largest growth, around 30 percent, in both the number of vehicles and revenue was recorded by AZM.

On the highways managed by the Croatian highways concessionaire (HAC), 5.6 million vehicles were registered in the first three months of this year, which is a year-on-year decrease of 1.9 percent, while the toll revenue for that concessionaire increased by 9 percent to 212.5 million kuna (all revenues are excluding VAT).

On the Rijeka-Zagreb highway, managed by the same concessionaire, there were 2.6 million vehicles, or 5.8 percent less, while toll revenue recorded a slight increase of 0.5 percent to 70.9 million kuna.

On the Zagreb-Macelj highway, 1.4 million vehicles were recorded in the first three months of this year, which is an increase of 33.9 percent compared to the same period last year, and the same concessionaire generated toll revenue of 34.1 million kuna, or 26.4 percent more than in the first quarter of last year.

On the highways under the jurisdiction of BINA Istra, 1.2 million vehicles passed, and toll revenue amounted to 28.5 million kuna, which represents a year-on-year increase in the number of vehicles by 4.3 percent and revenue by 2.4 percent.
