Today, the results of the referendum should be known, in which members of 15 unions of public and state services voted from January 15 to 17 on whether they support a general strike and blockade of the state system if the Government does not meet their demands.
According to preliminary results, the majority supports the strikes and blockade, said Vilim Ribić, president of the Union of Unions, on Friday for Croatian Radio. By Friday, 57% of the membership had participated in the referendum, and 82% expressed support for the strike and blockade of the system. This could be a strike that will seriously shake the Government, he said.
The unions are demanding the abandonment of the policy of wage cuts and austerity measures, the restoration of all seized and reduced allowances, salary supplements, and coefficients, the repeal of laws and acts that reduce the cost of labor in public and state services, adequate financing of their activities, and the inclusion of unions in resolving the issue of surplus employees in public and state services.
The referendum, which was conducted throughout Croatia, exclusively included union members, who answered ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the question ‘Will you personally participate in the strike and blockade of our system until the demands are met in the time, scope, and manner in which your union will organize it together with other unions of public and state services?’.
