Demolition Begins on Vir

On the island of Vir, a symbol of illegal construction in Croatia, the demolition of illegally built structures begins this morning.

With police security, excavators will start demolishing at 8 a.m. The focus will primarily be on commenced constructions and structures not intended for permanent residence, for which owners have not applied for legalization by the stipulated deadline, i.e., by the end of last year.

There are about 8,000 illegally constructed buildings on the island of Vir, and legalization has been requested for just over 4,000 structures so far.  Minister of Construction Anka Mrak Taritaš announced that in the first phase, 10,752 structures will be demolished.
