Pope Benedict will resign on February 28, his spokesman Federico Lombardi told CNN.
The Pope explained this decision by citing a lack of strength, noting that he is leaving ‘for the good of the Church’.
As foreign agencies report, the Pope is aware of the gravity of this decision, but emphasizes that he is leaving of his own accord.
Benedict was elected as the head of the Church in 2005, following the death of Pope John Paul II.
