Last year, 12 counties with a surplus in trade

Data on Croatia’s trade with foreign countries by counties show that last year, 12 Croatian counties achieved a surplus, while the largest share of imports and exports typically relates to the city of Zagreb, which also has the largest share in the foreign trade deficit in 2012.

According to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, exports from companies in the city of Zagreb in 2012 amounted to 3.5 billion euros, or 10.8 percent more than in 2011, while imports increased by 1.6 percent to 9.6 billion euros.

In total Croatian exports, which amounted to 9.6 billion euros last year, the city of Zagreb accounted for 36.7 percent, while its share in total imports of 16.16 billion euros is significantly higher at 59.6 percent.

In Croatia’s foreign trade deficit, which amounted to 6.5 billion euros last year, Zagreb, with a deficit of 6.1 billion euros, has a share of as much as 93.2 percent.

Data on trade expressed in euros show that last year, 12 counties achieved a surplus in trade, namely Krapina-Zagorje, Sisak-Moslavina, Karlovac, Varaždin, Koprivnica-Križevci, Lika-Senj, Virovitica-Podravina, Požega-Slavonia, Zadar, Osijek-Baranja, Istria, and Međimurje.

The largest surplus in 2012 was achieved by Varaždin County, amounting to 225.1 million euros. Exports from this county increased by 3.3 percent last year to 749.9 million euros, while imports fell by 5.9 percent to 524.8 million euros.

Following is Sisak-Moslavina County with a surplus in trade amounting to 204.7 million euros, as goods worth 486.3 million euros were exported from this county last year (9.8 percent less than in 2011), while imports amounted to 281.6 million euros (a decrease of 5.2 percent).

The foreign trade surplus of Međimurje County simultaneously amounted to 98.8 million euros, resulting from exports of 405.9 million euros (3 percent more) and imports of 307.1 million euros (3 percent less).

The smallest foreign trade surplus was recorded by Lika-Senj County at 5.7 million euros, whose entrepreneurs exported goods worth 17.2 million euros to foreign markets in 2012, or 66.6 percent more compared to 2011, with a simultaneous decrease in imports by 13.4 percent to 11.46 million euros.

Last year, the largest deficit after the city of Zagreb was recorded by Zagreb County, amounting to 859.3 million euros. Exports from Zagreb County last year amounted to 356.9 million euros, which is 20.8 percent more than in 2011, while imports decreased by 2.8 percent to 1.2 billion euros.

The deficit of Split-Dalmatia County amounts to 195.2 million euros, as a result of a 21 percent drop in exports to 473.6 million euros and a simultaneous increase in imports by 8.9 percent to 668.8 million euros.
