Today, the fourth public discussion on the proposed property tax law was held in Rijeka with representatives from municipalities and cities of Istria, Lika-Senj, and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, organized by the associations of cities and municipalities and the Ministry of Finance.
Addressing those present, Deputy Minister of Finance Boris Lalovac emphasized that the property tax is exclusively a replacement for utility fees and that there will be no greater tax burden for citizens. Those who own multiple properties, especially those that are not in use, will be taxed more.
Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel, who is also the president of the Association of Cities, noted that this association was involved in the drafting of the law and that many of its suggestions were accepted. Obersnel is confident that after the presentation cycle is completed, the law will be further improved.
In a statement to reporters, Obersnel said that the introduction of the property tax will bring relief to city administrations, given that the utility fee had a legally limited purpose of expenditure. It will facilitate our business planning, and higher revenues are expected compared to those from the utility fee, said Obersnel.
The next public discussion on the property tax will be held on February 18 in Varaždin.
