Although young people today have the choice between 2,000 different professions, most opt for those that research indicates are ‘in demand’ in the labor market.
The EduCentar portal investigated the extent to which education and professional achievements of parents influence this choice. The survey was conducted with over 400 respondents.
More than half of the respondents (60 percent) stated that their parents’ guidance and professional reach had no impact on their educational choices. A significant portion of respondents emphasized that they made independent decisions about their lives and followed their desires and interests: -I am a person who decides for myself, my parents taught me that.-
Nearly a third of respondents (28 percent) indicated that their parents had some influence, but not entirely. Respondents noted that their parents guided them on the right path and motivated them for greater professional success.
-They always encouraged me to learn and strive for better. They have a secondary vocational education, and I have a higher one.- explains one of the respondents.
Respondents also acknowledge that they have better opportunities than their parents had:
-My parents did not have the opportunities that I have, but adopting their work discipline and ethics helped me achieve what I wanted. Today I am a PhD.”
Only 12 percent of respondents were directly influenced by their parents when making decisions about their educational direction.
Although their parents’ educational and work patterns helped them, a few respondents emphasize that, viewed from today’s perspective, they regret such choices:
-On the suggestion of one parent, I enrolled in that direction. Personally, I have no affinity for it, so I regret it today. I should have insisted on what I love because when you do something you don’t love, you are bad at it.-
