The departure of young people to work abroad used to be an investment by the extended family, but today the decision rests solely on the individual, who is more educated and competitive compared to previous generations of ‘gastarbeiters’.
Young people thus need every dollar or euro to establish their lives abroad, and less and less is being sent home. However, in addition to the absence of remittances that once generated development, Croatia is now also facing the emigration of its most capable individuals.
