China is ready to export third generation nuclear reactors, CAP 1400, of its own production, designed based on Westinghouse’s AP 1000 reactor, said Gu Jun, the CEO of the State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation, as reported by China Daily on Saturday.
No so-called third generation reactor, which builders claim promises safer and longer-lasting operation than current ones, has yet been commissioned anywhere in the world.
Four units of the AP 1000 from the American-Japanese consortium Westinghouse-Toshiba are currently under construction at two plants in eastern China and several more in the United States.
“Research on the global market for CAP 1400 will begin in 2013,” Gu said at a symposium on Friday in the Chinese capital, as reported by China Daily, adding that the research will be conducted in collaboration with Westinghouse.
China is by far the largest global market for the construction of nuclear power plants.
