The annual assembly of the Northwest Croatian Regional HNS Association has elected former First Deputy Prime Minister Radimir Čačić as the president of the Association, HNS announced.
HNS states that during the serving of a possible sentence determined by a verdict, the duties of the president of the Regional Association will be performed by one of the two vice presidents of the Association.
On January 22, the Zagreb County Court confirmed a 22-month prison sentence for Radimir Čačić, imposed by a Hungarian court for causing a traffic accident that resulted in the deaths of two people. After serving half of the sentence, he will be able to request early release, but he will not be allowed to drive a motor vehicle for three years.
Since the Hungarian judicial authorities have given prior consent, the final decision of the Croatian judiciary must be confirmed by the Hungarian Minister of Justice, and only then will Čačić be able to serve his sentence in one of the Croatian prisons.
Čačić was definitively sentenced to 22 months in prison in Hungary at the end of November for causing a traffic accident in which two people died in January 2010. Following that decision, he immediately resigned from his position as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, but remained in his role as president of HNS.
