In order to collect 77 million kuna in taxes, the state will forgive seven debtors the interest that exceeds the principal debt, amounting to 113 million kuna, writes today’s Novi list.
Forgiving interest that exceeds the principal debt is a way for the state to attempt to collect at least part of its claims, which, along with interest, have grown to 50 billion kuna over the past decade.
The government confirmed on Thursday the decision of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture to write off interest for companies that have repaid their debt in a lump sum. These two ministries will collectively write off 113.4 million kuna in interest for seven debtors, while the debtors have paid a total of 77 million kuna in debt to the state.
The Ministry of Agriculture is writing off 25.67 million kuna in interest for the company Vodovod i kanalizacija from Split, which has paid a few thousand kuna less in principal. The Ministry of Finance is writing off interest amounting to 87.788 million kuna for the national parks Plitvička jezera, Brijuni, and Kornati, as well as for the companies Luje, Brna, and Predionica Klanjec. In return, these debtors have paid 52 million kuna in principal.
Finance Minister Slavko Linić also informed the government on Thursday about changes in the excise tax system, which should not increase the price of any product for citizens except for cigarettes. Croatia is expected to reach European excise taxes and prices in several phases over the next few years.
