Bandić Engages 1000 Students for Sidewalk Cleaning

Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandić emphasized late Tuesday evening at the meeting of the Winter Service Headquarters in Lipnica that he goes to sleep peacefully because public transport and all other vital functions of the city are operational, schools, kindergartens, hospitals, health centers, emergency services, and all institutions are accessible.

– We have cleared the first and second levels of Zagreb’s roads, and on Wednesday we will clear the third level and the remaining sidewalks, parking lots, and all those neuralgic points in the city that need to be cleaned – he stated. He conveyed that their task is to clear the remaining priorities and wait for Thursday afternoon ready for new snow. He assessed that they have done everything with a two plus, but emphasized that they can do much better. He pointed out that today they must address the priorities, engage 1000 students who will clear snow from sidewalks and parking lots, as well as hospitals and other institutions that have not yet been cleared. He said that this must be cleaned on Wednesday because it can no longer happen that elderly people cannot reach six or seven health centers.

He stated that there is enough salt for snow clearing, and they will procure more to have it in reserve. – We have people, we have the technique, we will mobilize everything, this city knows that, the people who lead this city are responsible, there is no panic, no chaos, no natural disaster, and we will do our job – Mayor Bandić stated. Today around noon, he announced a meeting with the directors of 10 to 15 largest construction companies to ensure that by Thursday evening, 200 trucks and 50 loaders will be available for the new snow that is expected.
– I will leave nothing to chance, so the city does not get buried. A small municipal service, regardless of how organized, cannot meet the task without additional forces if it snows again within two days – he emphasized.

– We must take this matter seriously to the end. I ask the presidents of the City District Councils to wake up where the local committees have fallen asleep, to do their job – Bandić said, adding that on Tuesday they received hundreds of calls to the Winter Service Headquarters and the duty free phone for citizens. ‘This means that local committees need to take on their function,’ he emphasized. When asked by journalists how much money has been secured for the Winter Service, the head of Zagreb Roads, a subsidiary of Zagreb Holding, Alen Gospočić, replied that for the 2012/2013 season, 45 million kuna has been secured for Zagreb Roads, while in the previous season, 28 million kuna was secured.

Bandić emphasized that no one has been dismissed or relieved in the Winter Service Headquarters, but they have co-opted people, strengthening the Headquarters considering the situation we are in. He thanked everyone who cleared the snow. The coordinator of the Department for Veterans in the City Administration, Miodrag Demo, reported that around 1,800 veterans cleared snow on Tuesday.
