‘It is over with the policy that will make you competitive through devaluation’

Before today’s meeting of the SDP Main Board, the party president and Prime Minister Zoran Milanović reflected on the recent explosions in Zagreb, his first year in power, and the upcoming local elections.

Despite the explosions, Milanović believes that Zagreb will remain a safe city where people live well and openly, as reported by Dnevnik.hr. 
He emphasized that his party leads this government, the state, and the party itself as an open society, where people are free and nothing is imposed by force and threats, but through long dialogue.

Ahead of the local elections, Milanović stressed that elections are the second most important thing for them, with the first being the security of the country. 

“In politics, you must make decisions. If you do not make them, everything stands still,” said Milanović, adding that the local elections will be very important for their verification. He also addressed some misunderstandings within the party and highlighted that the autonomy of local organizations is respected in 99 percent of cases, and where they believe they must act, they will not wait with crossed arms but will work.

This year, Milanović called a year of challenges. Croatia will become a member of the EU despite minor difficulties, he assessed. He stated that he is deeply convinced that as a government, but also as a nation, we have real chances to succeed and maintain the stability of the state. He emphasized that even the ‘darlings of Europe’ do not know when things will get better for them now.
The first year of his government he called a year of restraint, not austerity, because austerity only occurs when there is something to save. He also added that they have been rational but need to find the right balance. 

“It is over with the policy that will make you competitive through devaluation. Countries that functioned this way were our role models, but when they entered the eurozone, they fell,” emphasized Milanović.
