Due to the irresponsible behavior of opposition city councilors, Slavonski Brod is threatened with collapse; the city has no budget or Decision on temporary financing, so it cannot manage its account, and the government has not yet adopted the announced special law that should apply in such cases, warned Mayor Mirko Duspara.
Mayor of Slavonski Brod Mirko Duspara again appealed at today’s press conference to the ministries of finance and administration to issue guidance on how the City of Slavonski Brod can manage its account, as this jeopardizes the normal functioning of city schools, kindergartens, the Public Fire Station, and other users of the city treasury.
Slavonski Brod is the only Croatian city that still does not have a budget, and after its rejection, opposition city councilors unlawfully adopted the Decision on temporary financing of the City. Mayor Duspara suspended the Decision, and its illegality was confirmed yesterday by the Office of State Administration in Brod-Posavina County. The new Law on Amendments to the Law on Local and Regional Self-Government states that in such cases, a special law will be applied, but such a law does not yet exist in Croatia.
Duspara reminded that classes begin on Monday, and due to the inability to further procure energy sources, it is uncertain how students will be heated.
“Due to the irresponsibility of city councilors, without guidance from the ministries in this legal interim space, Slavonski Brod is threatened with collapse. We cannot allow schools and kindergartens, as well as essential city services such as firefighters, to become collateral victims of the city’s political elite,” warned the Mayor of Slavonski Brod.
