Accommodation in Zagreb More Expensive than in Lisbon and Athens

Hotels in Zagreb, with an average overnight cost of around 85 euros in November last year, were significantly cheaper than hotels in numerous European metropolises, according to the latest hotel price barometer from the booking service hotel.info, which has a network of over 210,000 hotels worldwide.

The barometer, reported today from the hotel.info headquarters in Nuremberg, not only lists prices but also compares overnight costs with the previous year, indicating that the costs of staying in Zagreb hotels in November last year fell by 7.4 percent compared to the same month in 2011.

Lower average prices than those in Zagreb were recorded in that month for hotel rooms in Greece and Portugal, specifically Lisbon and Athens, where prices fell by 16 percent compared to the same period in 2011, to around 68 euros (Lisbon) and by more than 18 percent, to around 67 euros (Athens).

This decline, which is one of the largest among European capitals, is explained by hotel.info as a result of the effects of the crisis-affected economies of those countries, which hotel operators particularly felt.

The most expensive European metropolis in terms of hotel overnight prices remains Moscow, where the barometer indicated a price of just over 179 euros in November last year, but also a decrease of 2.4 percent compared to the same month in 2011.

London and Stockholm rank second and third with hotel prices of 166 and 156 euros, respectively, which are increases of 3.7 and 8.2 percent, making these cities among the few in Europe where hotel room prices and overnight costs have risen compared to 2011.

An increase in average prices of 2.2 percent, to around 133.5 euros, was also recorded by hotels in Helsinki, while most other European metropolises saw a decline in hotel room prices in November last year, according to the barometer.

In addition to Lisbon and Athens with larger declines (among the top 10 by prices), Oslo and Kyiv also stand out, where hotel prices fell by 10.4 percent, to 153 euros, and by 11.1 percent, to 121.4 euros.

Prices in hotels in Copenhagen fell to 133 euros or by 1.3 percent compared to November 2011, in Paris by almost 4 percent, to 128 euros, in Brussels by 4.6 percent, to 119.3 euros, and in Amsterdam by 7 percent, to 116.5 euros.

Hotels in Istanbul had lower average overnight prices, around 98 euros, with no comparison provided to 2011.
