The American Film Institute has announced the ten best films of the year, including the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, and the drama ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ by Benh Zeitlin.
As highlighted on the institute’s website, the list also includes favorites in the Oscar race such as ‘Lincoln’ by Steven Spielberg, ‘Argo’ by Ben Affleck, ‘Les Misérables’ by Tom Hooper, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ by Kathryn Bigelow, and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ by David Russell. Among the selected are ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ by Wes Anderson, ‘Life of Pi’ by Ang Lee, and ‘Django Unchained’ by Quentin Tarantino. In the television production category, AMC’s series ‘Mad Men’ has been recognized among the best works of 2012 for the fifth time, while ‘Modern Family’ (ABC) and ‘Breaking Bad’ (AMC) have been awarded for the fourth time.
New series on the list include ‘Girls’ (HBO) and ‘American Horror Story’ (FX), while ‘Louie’ (FX), ‘The Walking Dead’ (AMC), and ‘Homeland’ (AMC) have been selected for the second time. ‘Game Change’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ (both HBO) have also been included. ‘These awards are dedicated to American filmmakers as collaborators,’ stated Bob Gazzale, President and CEO of the American Film Institute, in a statement. ‘It is our honor to bring them all together in one place to recognize the gifts they have given to the world in 2012, beyond any competition,’ he added.
