HT first in the world presented the network of the future – TeraStream

Croatian Telecom today in Zagreb first in the world presented the network of the future – TeraStream.

In front of several dozen guests from political, economic, academic, and public life at the Lauba House, the world premiere of the technology was held, marking a technological breakthrough as it simplifies network and access topology. TeraStream increases the speed of the access network by about 50 times compared to current capacities – access allows the user a speed of 1 Gbit/s. With the new network technology, the unit cost of data transmission is significantly reduced, enabling the mass construction of optical access for users.
TeraStream is a new network concept that allows for simpler realization and integration of advanced services of the future. It is a technological concept whereby all services, including
traditional telco services (voice, IPTV, internet access) are provided from the Cloud, unlike today when they are provided via the network. This innovative network technology was first implemented by Croatian Telecom within the Deutsche Telekom Group for testing the concept and improving its functionalities.
Croatian Telecom has invested nearly 13 billion kuna in infrastructure and services over the past ten years, and the investment in the TeraStream project is worth more than 30 million kuna. The pilot phase will take place through December 2012 and during 2013. Based on user experiences and the conducted analysis of the business model, HT will make a decision on the possible commercial application of the tested TeraStream technology.
TeraStream is an extremely simplified concept of an IP network that combines network technology, data center technology, and optical infrastructure. The TeraStream concept implies the flow of significantly larger volumes of data at multiple higher speeds. In this pilot phase, the network was initially built with two data centers (Zagreb and Varaždin), providing up to 10 times greater capacity than previous technologies. The total installed capacity is 400 Gbit/s, which represents three times the capacity of the total real traffic of all current HT commercial services. TeraStream is entirely based on the IPv6 protocol, which gives each user more internet addresses than are currently used on the entire global internet. For the first pilot phase of implementation, the partner in Croatia is the company Cisco.

Today’s technologies are based on the assumption that basic services (voice, IPTV…) are still provided in the network. TeraStream implies that all services are provided from the Cloud and can be quickly connected and upgraded. The IPv6 technology, which is an integral part of the TeraStream concept, ensures that every device in the household, from refrigerators and ovens to security systems and computers, can have its public IP address, and we can manage them from anywhere and at any time.

For all this to be possible, TeraStream uses Cloud technologies as the basic form of providing all services: complete connectivity and building home networks on a plug and play principle. This implies high-quality video conferencing connections with all family members and friends, online education, video multiplayer gaming, backup of all data in the Cloud, teleworking from a home office, and more. Business users will be able to offer services faster, access all devices in the office more easily, have better security systems, establish video conferencing contact with clients, employees, and business partners, and easily store data in the Cloud and work on a virtual desktop. – TeraStream represents a revolutionary concept in the telecom industry, and its implementation largely depends on investments in data centers and advanced optical infrastructure and LTE technology. Croatian Telecom has been successfully implementing new technologies (IPTV, Cloud, LTE, NFC, ICT Marketplace…) in this area for years, and TeraStream pilot proves itself as a company that introduces technological innovations on a global level,” they say at HT.
Investments in optical infrastructure, a project that HT announced several years ago, have been halted due to differing views with the regulator, so the continuation of investments in FttH access, on which the TeraStream concept relies, depends on whether HT will accept the conditions of HAKOM or whether the regulator will change the existing Regulation.
