Protests against ‘corrupt elites’, as interpreted by the groups organizing them via Facebook, are spreading across Slovenia, with another protest scheduled for Friday in Ljubljana.
The Facebook group ‘Let Prime Minister Janez Janša Step Down’ has called for those who will join them for peaceful protests against political elites, as well as the increasingly difficult social conditions in the country, to bring flyers, banners, old alarm clocks, and flowers to demonstrate that they do not want violence and that police intervention will not be necessary, reports Dnevnik.hr.
The largest protest so far took place on Monday in Maribor, where there were injuries and arrests following an action by special police who used tear gas and other means as a smaller group of protesters used granite cubes and torches during an ‘attack’ on the city hall. The next day, a protest was held in Ljubljana, but less than a thousand people gathered in the city center to show solidarity with the protesters in Maribor, while protests in Jesenice, Kranj, and some other places proceeded without disorder and police intervention. Similar protests have been informally announced in some other cities at the end of this week and the beginning of next week.
