Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the 20 poorest countries in the world where every sixth resident goes to bed hungry every night, the middle class has long ceased to exist, and the gap between the rich and the poor is widening, writes Nezavisne novine.
There are, indeed, those who can afford cars worth a million marks, but unfortunately, there are more people driving cars that are 20 years old. The average pension today in Bosnia and Herzegovina is 340 convertible marks (about 170 euros), while the average monthly salary is 830 convertible marks (about 415 euros). More than 50 percent of pensioners receive around 150 euros monthly, while on the other hand, the highest pension received by several thousand citizens amounts to 700-800 euros.
The social situation is best described by the fact that the standard of living of citizens in BiH is the lowest in the region. According to the latest analyses, one in five residents in BiH lives on three convertible marks a day, and about 20,000 of them are fed once a day in a public kitchen.
