Former Serbian President Boris Tadić stated on Friday that the Hague Tribunal’s decision to acquit Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markač produces severe consequences and called on Croatian politicians and citizens to refrain from triumphalism.
– The verdict represents a deep and serious blow to international justice and produces severe consequences in the Western Balkans – Tadić told the Beta agency, emphasizing that ‘a certain triumphalism can be seen in Croatia and great despondency in Serbia’.
– Numerous questions arise about the objectivity of the court, which carry dangerous interpretations of the role of international institutions – Tadić asserted. According to him, the question also arises to what extent international institutions are under political pressure. He urged Serbia not to abandon international law and justice despite such a decision from The Hague.
– If Serbia abandons the idea of international justice and law due to such verdicts, it then becomes a participant in establishing injustice – Tadić emphasized.
– Serbia has no other path but to continue the policy of reconciliation and the fight for the establishment of rights and justice, despite all the difficulties on that path – Tadić said.
– Any triumphalism in Croatia, which is evident at this moment, does not contribute to the policy of reconciliation and better relations between Croatia and Serbia – asserted the former Serbian president.
– Therefore, I appeal to my colleagues, to all citizens of Croatia, for restraint even on this day – Tadić conveyed.
