The End of the Season Brought a 14.4 Percent Decline in Retail

Retail trade in Croatia in September fell nominally by 12.5 percent and real by 14.4 percent compared to August.

On an annual basis, it nominally decreased by 1.4 percent and real by 6 percent, according to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS).

The real decline in retail trade on an annual basis has continued for the seventh consecutive month in September this year. The decline in retail in September compared to August is usual and is primarily a result of seasonal movements, given that the main part of the tourist season ends in August.

Statistical data by trade sectors show that nominal sales fell in 11 trade sectors on a monthly basis. In non-specialized stores predominantly selling food, which has a share of 37.6 percent in total retail, sales in September compared to August nominally decreased by 19 percent.

A decline of 19.7 percent was recorded in the sale of motor fuels and lubricants, which accounts for 21.4 percent of total retail. On an annual basis, in September this year compared to the same month last year, sales fell in 12 trade sectors, with the largest decline in the sale of motor vehicles, by 33 percent. Retail sales in September increased on an annual basis in six trade sectors. Sales of motor fuels and lubricants increased by 6.3 percent, sales in non-specialized stores predominantly selling food by 4.6 percent, tobacco products by 1 percent, etc.
