Residents of two small towns in the northern American state of New Hampshire opened this year’s presidential elections in the U.S. by fulfilling their civic duty by voting at midnight, world agencies reported on Tuesday.
In the first 43 seconds of November 6, in Dixville Notch, current U.S. President and Democratic candidate Barack Obama received five votes, as did his Republican opponent Mitt Romney. ‘This is the first time that the voting results are tied,’ said one of the residents.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney voted on Tuesday morning together with his wife Ann in his district of Belmont in the state of Massachusetts. Barack Obama voted on October 25 in Chicago and became the first president in history to vote before the actual elections.
The latest polls predict an equal number of votes for Romney and his Democratic opponent, current President Barack Obama, although polls from the Washington Post, ABC News, and Pew Research Center as of November 4 give a three-point advantage to Barack Obama.
Obama, who is spending election day in Chicago, went to a local campaign office in the morning to thank volunteers.
‘I want to congratulate Governor Romney on a spirited campaign, but we are confident that we will get the votes needed for victory,’ Obama said. ‘I want to encourage everyone, on both sides, to exercise the precious right to vote for which so many people fought,’ he added.
‘I expect to have a good evening, but regardless of what happens, I thank everyone who has supported me and who has worked hard on my behalf,’ said the current president.
Famous and Celebrities Join the Campaign
Famous and celebrities have joined in via Twitter in the final stretch of the American presidential campaign, urging millions of their fans to go out and vote. ‘Desperate Housewife’ Eva Longoria attached a badge ‘I Voted’ for Obama to her photo and called on five million of her Twitter friends to follow her.
A similar call, but to ten million of his friends, was made by Snoop Dogg, the hip-hop star, as well as singer Pharrell Williams and basketball star LeBron James with the message ‘The President has a lot of work ahead, don’t forget to vote.’
Obama is supported by actresses Mia Farrow and Julianne Moore, singers Mary J. Blige and Katy Perry, who has 28 million fans. For Obama’s victory, singer Bruce Springsteen and rapper Jay-Z are backing him. It seems that the famous and celebrities are less inclined towards Romney. Actresses Melissa Joan Hart and Stacey Dash are fighting for his votes among their fans.
